The Ultimate Sport
Thumbing my way through the latest SUB product brochures and magazines provides a portal into the mindset of those driving the sport; how they perceive it’s very nature and ultimate appeal. Page after page, aspirational imagery methodically chosen to inspire my imagination, hints at the seemingly endless experiences SUP will provide. Spiced with many of the usual clichés; I will be good looking, athletic; a maverick journeyman who will find my spiritual high place whether on a lake, river, dam or fjord, shore break, point break, reef break or idyllic tropical lagoon.
Technically simplistic, equipmentally unfettered, participation will seemingly elevate you from suburbanite to quasi-waterman status faster than you can say SUP. Well, the sport can certainly take you places, provide you with unique experiences, shape and maintain a healthy body.
Alarmingly, many SUBs may become like those Ab-Machines purchased via late night TV ads and become dust collectors in the garage because the user never really got to grips with the fundamental principles and felt non of the benefits as promised. Don't be fooled by the sports simplicity; more than a sport, it can of course be a lifestyle involving a lifetime commitment to a connection with nature, experiences and friendships. Like most things in life, you will only get out what you're prepared to put in.
